Sound system: "I arrived before midnight and entered the main room where the sound system was pretty damn loud! The instant I stepped through the door it felt like a sonic hammer smacked me in the head! It was nice, but I'm amazed that people were able to dance in front of the speakers and withstand the assault."

Decorations: "Two large projection screens were set up at the front corners of the dance floor flashing stimulating visuals, and these were controlled via computer set up on a scaffold in the middle of the room. The walls were adorned with black plastic bags and large white sheets that were decorated with spray-painted graffiti artwork, and huge spray-painted balloons hung from the ceiling. The lighting was pretty good, but was limited to the front half of the dancefloor. The DJ booth was set up in a corner up above and away from the crowd which had a nice arial view of the room. However, it would have been nicer if it was set up on the stage closer to the dancefloor where the DJ and the crowd could see each other and make that nice intimate connection.

"The smaller second room was similarly decorated with spray-painted black plastic on the walls and balloons hanging. But there were these two large trampolines hung up at the back and decorated to look like two huge eyes looking torward the dancefloor."

Ambient Room: "The ambient room was set up in a brand new room used normally for live theatre. People sat back in the rows of seating while the DJ was set up on stage. The room wasn't elaborately decorated, but there was a small projection screen playing on stage along with red candles burning and dim red lighting to match. The atmosphere was peaceful, but the sound was perhaps a bit too loud given the setting."

Music: "At ~12:30, Ryan Raddon came on in the main room spinning some hard jungle. I was kind of surprised since this sort of style is rarely played here, but it was pretty neat and I danced a bit to his set. Edmonton's Corey Payne came on at 1:45 for a live performance. There were some technical difficulties at the start, but it was quickly fixed and Corey had a solid performance playing some nice trance. I wan't quite into the party yet, but Speedy helped fix that when he started his set at 2:30. Acid was the order of the night, and Speedy served it up good and plenty blending in elements of house, progressive and Detroit techno and continually driving the beat forward in a fluid mix.

"At 3 I headed over to the 2nd room to check out one of my favourite DJs, Deko-Ze. Tonight he kicked his set off with a bang keeping the tempo fast paced as he usually does. But during the middle of his set, where he normally brings the tempo down, the flow of the music wasn't very smooth. Too often there were breakdowns within the song where there was no beat. To me, when this happens consecutively and too often, the continuity of the music is interrupted and this disrupts rather than builds up the mood being created. Despite my criticism, I still love to hear this guy spin and I continue to look forward to whenever he comes into town.

"I wandered back to the main room and danced to the rest of Speedy's set and around 4:30, Ryan 7 came on. His set consisted of progressive acid-trance with a kind of dark sound to it. I was already dead tired, but I couldn't resist the music, and so I had to dance a bit to his set before I finally checked out at 6.

"Overall, it was a fairly decent party. The music was pretty good with the sound just crazy, perhaps a little too intense for some. There was a pretty good turnout with about 700 people in attendance, and the overall atmosphere wasn't too bad either. I'd say the party was worth $12.98."

"This party was a much anticipated event as last year's Nexus was quite the big party. This time it was a 3-day event with the pre-party on Nov. 8 at Oasis Nightclub, the after-party on Nov. 10 at Peoples Nightclub, and the main event on the 9th at the Old Strathcona Bus Barns. A huge line-up of over 30 DJs over the three nights were set to play [...] and Calgary's very own Double D playing for the first time in Edmonton, as well as many Edmonton DJs.

"I arrived at midnight to be greeted with a massively long line-up which I was not too impressed with. But with 1400+(!) people in attendance, it should have been expected. When I finally got in, I scouted out the place. The main room was full of people happily dancing to acid and trance. The sound was noticeably loud (very nice!) and lighting was ok. What I thought was pretty original was that there were these two inflated jumping castles you could climb into and bounce around in situated at the edges of the huge dance floor. Pretty cool! As well, there was an area off to the side with a mat where the breakdancers could show their stuff.

"I really liked the way that the ambient room was set up. There were mats and rugs on the floor so people could sit or lie down. There were also couches, cribs, a wading pool filled with something, and even a bed. The atmosphere was very peaceful with candles all around, a trippy oil suspension pattern projected on the wall, and the DJs spinning beautiful ambient, trance, and jungle. Great set-up overall!

"The DJ line-up was greatly shuffled that night because of technical problems in the 2nd room which was closed when I arrived. The main room was supposed to be the 'core' room and the 2nd room the 'progressive room,' but that got switched around. DJs such as Nav, Voytek, and Pascal who were slated to play in the 2nd room were moved to the main room. Nonetheless, I was sure that Double D would still play her set.

"Mostly I stayed in the ambient room relaxing and occasionally wandered over to the main room. I wanted to save my energy for Double D. At ~2:30, Pascal came on in the main room, so I headed over to the 2nd room which had just opened back up. Lo and behold, there was Double D starting things up cranking out some glorious hardcore. I was starting to get really high off her set when suddenly at 3:05 the music went dead. I hung around hoping, praying that the technical problem would be fixed, but alas, at 4am the room was shut down for the rest of the night. Well, it was good while it lasted.

"I didn't stay much longer afterwards. It looked like Tryptomene spinning in the main room, but I didn't feel like dancing anymore. It just wasn't the same after experiencing Double D. I was an addict getting a powerful drug but was cut off before receiving a full dose and lesser drugs couldn't satisfy my hunger."

"This review is actually only a partial review since I was only in the techno room and I never went to the other venues. I arrived at about midnight and caught the last 5 minutes of someone's set who was playing some neat fast breakbeat.

"The [techno] room was just like an unfinished basement of a house. It was a small, bare, grey coloured room with a concrete floor. The lighting was minimal with lights at the back and front along with a strobe, and there were between 50 and 70 people in the room. This may sound really ordinary and plain, but you know what? I thought it was pretty cool! The simpleness of the room created a unique atmosphere of its own. Most of the people were dancing and really getting into the music, and the vibe was most positive.

"An ambient room was also supposed to be somewhere down there, but I couldn't find it. Oh well.

"DJ Vibes from Calgary started playing at 12, and he was spinning some cool trance and progressive. Technical difficulties arose sometime after 1 a.m. that stopped the music dead for about 15 minutes. But the problem got worked out and shortly thereafter was Deko-Ze's set. He started with some fierce hard acid, which I totally ate up, then he brought it down with some funky acid breaks and progressive beats. Then he brought things back up again with some marvellous acid and trance. What a wicked set!

"Sun E Smiles aka DJ Nicky came on afterwards at ~ 3 a.m. with some nice acid trance which I moved to for a little bit. But I had to go home and save some energy for the next night.

"Overall, it was a really fun night, and I really enjoyed myself. The party was worth $7.21 out of the $8 for the room. And to the girl that gave me a candy, thanx!"

"After 'Gatorave', I decided to head over and check out this party at around 3am, which was held at this place called the 'Fiddler's Roost' [picture below]. I only found out about this party the same day it was on so I couldn't attend earlier and I didn't stay long either. The featured DJ's were Echo, Corey Payne, Joy, Cziolek, and Sun E Smiles aka Nicky. There was also supposed to be a live act by Quantum Force which I missed, and Sherridon was playing in the ambient lounge.

"The lighting was minimal with the strobe lights illuminating the room, and the wood panel walls were covered with foil with some streamers hanging across it. I don't know what the place is normally used for, but it looked kind of like a church basement giving an atmosphere of a darkly lit hall party with techno. [...]

"This was not a very big event with only about 60-70 people present nor was this a big venue."
