"Two words: kick ass.  

"This was one of the best parties I've been to at the Rev / Lush. I arrived just after 11 and caught only the tail end of Tryptomene's set, but he was playing some kick ass progressive acid trance. In scouting out the place, I discovered that the entire building was being utilized for the party which is a first I believe. The main room was set up in the fully open Rev with the usual standard club lighting and fairly decent sound system as before. The house room was in the usual main floor of Lush, and the ambient room or the "Aloha Lounge Chill Zone" was in the basement with Edmonton's CBC and Ariel & Roel spinning. 

"Ah yes, the kick ass chill room. When I first stepped in there, the ground felt weird and it looked like some sort of shag carpeting. Then I realized it was grass! There were patches of sod on the floor of the club making a lawn, and this was just kick ass to the tenth power! There were patio lights and umbrellas, paper tropical plants hanging and a tropical smart bar, and there was a faint smell of incense mixed with the sweet smell of grass! I could have just laid there all night, but the dancefloor beckoned me so back up I went. [...]

"About 600 people were present with a pretty good vibe in the air. It was a decent production with an out of this world ambient room and supreme music. In other words, this party kicked ass. And sure, it was worth $12."

Sound system: "I arrived before midnight and entered the main room where the sound system was pretty damn loud! The instant I stepped through the door it felt like a sonic hammer smacked me in the head! It was nice, but I'm amazed that people were able to dance in front of the speakers and withstand the assault." 

Decorations: "Two large projection screens were set up at the front corners of the dance floor flashing stimulating visuals, and these were controlled via computer set up on a scaffold in the middle of the room. The walls were adorned with black plastic bags and large white sheets that were decorated with spray-painted graffiti artwork, and huge spray-painted balloons hung from the ceiling. The lighting was pretty good, but was limited to the front half of the dancefloor. The DJ booth was set up in a corner up above and away from the crowd which had a nice arial view of the room. However, it would have been nicer if it was set up on the stage closer to the dancefloor where the DJ and the crowd could see each other and make that nice intimate connection. 

"The smaller second room was similarly decorated with spray-painted black plastic on the walls and balloons hanging. But there were these two large trampolines hung up at the back and decorated to look like two huge eyes looking torward the dancefloor." 

Ambient Room: "The ambient room was set up in a brand new room used normally for live theatre. People sat back in the rows of seating while the DJ was set up on stage. The room wasn't elaborately decorated, but there was a small projection screen playing on stage along with red candles burning and dim red lighting to match. The atmosphere was peaceful, but the sound was perhaps a bit too loud given the setting."

Music: "At ~12:30, Ryan Raddon came on in the main room spinning some hard jungle. I was kind of surprised since this sort of style is rarely played here, but it was pretty neat and I danced a bit to his set. Edmonton's Corey Payne came on at 1:45 for a live performance. There were some technical difficulties at the start, but it was quickly fixed and Corey had a solid performance playing some nice trance. I wan't quite into the party yet, but Speedy helped fix that when he started his set at 2:30. Acid was the order of the night, and Speedy served it up good and plenty blending in elements of house, progressive and Detroit techno and continually driving the beat forward in a fluid mix. 

"At 3 I headed over to the 2nd room to check out one of my favourite DJs, Deko-Ze. Tonight he kicked his set off with a bang keeping the tempo fast paced as he usually does. But during the middle of his set, where he normally brings the tempo down, the flow of the music wasn't very smooth. Too often there were breakdowns within the song where there was no beat. To me, when this happens consecutively and too often, the continuity of the music is interrupted and this disrupts rather than builds up the mood being created. Despite my criticism, I still love to hear this guy spin and I continue to look forward to whenever he comes into town. 

"I wandered back to the main room and danced to the rest of Speedy's set and around 4:30, Ryan 7 came on. His set consisted of progressive acid-trance with a kind of dark sound to it. I was already dead tired, but I couldn't resist the music, and so I had to dance a bit to his set before I finally checked out at 6. 

"Overall, it was a fairly decent party. The music was pretty good with the sound just crazy, perhaps a little too intense for some. There was a pretty good turnout with about 700 people in attendance, and the overall atmosphere wasn't too bad either. I'd say the party was worth $12.98."

"This smaller scale party featured DJs Cziolek, Tripswitch, Geoffrey J, Serotonin, Gnome and others, and it was held in an empty building which was, I thought, a pretty neat venue. It wasn't as huge as the Strathcona Bus Barns, but there was still quite a bit of room to dance. There were 2 rooms: an ambient room and the main room. Lighting was simple and the sound was adequate. About 150 people were in attendance and the attitude was generally friendly. I arrived at ~midnight and heard Gnome play for the first time. He was playing drum'n'bass which was ok, but personally, I prefer sitting back and listening to it rather than dancing to it. Cziolek came on afterward and spun a fairly decent set of progressive acid and trance followed by someone I didn't recognize who spun a similar style set. At the very end of the night DJ Nadia spun 15 minutes of happy hardcore before the party ended at 5. 

"Overall, not too bad a party. It was small but it had a nice underground feel to it. I'd say the party was worth $6.25."

Chuck brings his Detroit techno and house sounds to Edmonton for their first time since his debut at Summer School. He has been playing parties in the Detroit area for 4 years now and has played with some of the worlds best DJ’s including Laurent Garnier, Richie Hawtin and Derek May as well as maintaining a Friday residency at Detroit’s Nectarine Ballroom where Jeff Mills honed his turntable skills.

De-Koze (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan):

Saskatoon’s own De-Koze spins a relentless hard acid/ anthemic techno sound. He has recently played a party with Dubtribe in Phoenix, as well as at Graceland in Vancouver. Part of the PPM Crew that brought you Ascendance and the Temple. De-Koze has become a vital part of the mid-west scene both as a dj and promoter.
